The Importance of Your Partner’s Body Language

Within relationships, your body language and the nonverbal tactics you employ say more about how you feel than words ever could. Whether you happen to be rolling your eyes or smiling from ear to ear, it’s important to point out that your partner can glean your exact emotional state from your subtle gestures, glances, and facial expressions.

As a matter of fact, a recent UCLA study broke this concept down into quantifiable categorizations:

  • Less than 10% of face-to-face communication is functionally relayed through words.
  • 38% is transmitted through tone and volume.
  • 55% comes from nonverbal elements such as body language, postures, and gestures.
If You Care, Show it!
The subconscious mind is an incredibly powerful tool in relationships, which is why you have to stay on your game by staying in tune with your partner’s nonverbal cues, especially if you’d like to avoid conflicts as much as possible.
For instance, if you see your partner sitting cross-legged, grimacing, and refusing to make eye contact, you have to internalize the fact that he or she is in a bad mood. When you see these subtle hints, don’t simply ignore them or hope they pass; act on them!
If you perceive a melancholy aura, you have the perfect opportunity to use some of your own nonverbal cues to show how much you truly care. Thus, an impromptu shoulder rub, kiss on the cheek, or warm embrace can go a long way towards assuaging a despondent mood.
